Blessed Be The Sick

Blessed be the sick, for they are a reminder that we can't make it here on our own, we are vulnerable, we need each other, we need to help each other, if we can.

Blessed be the sick, (and we who from time to time get sick), who endure the frustration, of not being able to get up, get out and about, without help, without pain, without feeling a burden.

That's the thing about getting sick, about times of being seriously sick, we are a reminder to all - including ourselves –that we are not, despite appearances, sit-alone, strong, autonomous entities.

We need help - all of us. We feel pain - all of us. We are a burden - all of us. It's just the way it is when we're human. It's just that, too often, we pretend otherwise.

Blessed be the sick, for they are a reminder that we can't make it here on our own, we are vulnerable, we need each other, we need to help each other, if we can.

Blessed be the sick, (and we who from time to time get sick), who realize that others too are suffering, and surrender to the knowledge that they are not alone but connected, not a single but a plural, not a stand-alone but a stand-together. Which sickness can teach us.

Blessed be the sick, (and we who from time to time get sick), who learn from sickness: lessons in frailty, lessons in not-doing, lessons in uselessness, lessons in resilience, lessons in dependency, lessons in life.

May we be blessed with enough foolishness to turn aside from the myths of health and strength to learn from sickness and the sick. For they have much to teach, and we have much to learn.
